BroadbandBreakfast.com is thus hosting a monthly Intellectual Property Breakfast Club, meeting on the Second Tuesday of the month to complement our successful Broadband Breakfast Club.

Intellectual property advocates, policy-makers, journalists, top officials and the general public, all seeking to trade insights on these important issues, are invited to attend this event of the BroadbandBreakfast.com, an online news service focusing on internet policy and intellectual property. Tickets to the event are FREE.

Title: What Intellectual Property Issues Are Top of Mind for 112th Congress? (Legislative Panel) 

Date: Tuesday, January 11, 2011, 8 a.m. - 10 a.m. 

Where: Clyde's of Gallery Place, 707 7th Street NW, Washington, DC 20001

The breakfast begins at 8 a.m., followed by a discussion, beginning shortly after 8:30 a.m. and ending by 10 a.m.

 

Panelists:

  • Ryan Clough, Legislative Counsel, Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-California)

Ryan Clough is Legislative Counsel to Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren (San Jose, CA), handling intellectual property, telecommunications, technology policy and issues within the jurisdiction of the House Judiciary Committee.  Previously, he was an associate in the Washington office of Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen & Hamilton, and he has also practiced criminal law and appeals in California, including the representation of several death row inmates in post-conviction proceedings.  Ryan has a B.A. from Emory University and a J.D. from Harvard Law School.

  • Laurent Crenshaw, Legislative Director, Rep. Darrell Issa (R-California)

Laurent Crenshaw is the Legislative Director for Rep. Darrell Issa (R-California) and the Chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. Laurent's responsibilities include overseeing all legislation produced by Rep. Issa's office, his telecommunications and intellectual property portfolios and his Judiciary and Foreign Affairs Committee work. Laurent has served under Chairman Issa for nearly six years. Prior to his time as Legislative Director, he served as Senior Legislative Assistant. Laurent previously served as Assistant Press Secretary for the House Majority Whip, and starting his career in the House Republican Conference. He holds a BA in International Relations from Stanford University, and a JD from American University.

  • Caroline Holland, Chief Counsel, Sen. Herbert Kohl (D-Wisconsin)

Caroline Holland is Chief Counsel and Staff Director of the Senate Judiciary Committee Subcommittee on Antitrust, Competition Policy and Consumer Rights, chaired by Senator Herb Kohl (D-WI).  Prior to assuming this position in 2008, she served as counsel to Senator Kohl and the Subcommittee working on civil law issues including immigration, bankruptcy, access to justice, civil rights, and constitutional law. Before joining the Subcommittee, Caroline was an attorney in private practice in Washington, D.C. focusing on public policy and regulatory work. Ms. Holland holds a J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center and a B.A. in Public Policy from Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut.

  • Jeff Lowenstein, Senior Legislative Assistant, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-California)

Jeff Lowenstein is Senior Legislative Assistant to Congressman Adam Schiff (D-CA).  In that capacity he is chief advisor to Rep. Schiff on telecommunications and intellectual property, as well as primary staffer for the bicameral International Anti Piracy Caucus. Congressman Schiff was a member of the Judiciary Committee and the Appropriations Committee in the 111th Congress and has been a vocal proponent of measures to protect the rights of copyright holders in the United States and abroad. Jeff is a 2004 graduate of Georgetown University.

  • Neil Quinter, Chief Counsel, Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-California)

Neil Quinter has had two stints as Chief Counsel to Senator Dianne Feinstein, handling intellectual property and other issues, the first from 1995-99 and again since 2009.  In between, Neil was a Partner at McDermott Will & Emery, and was elected to the Maryland House of Delegates in 2002, where he served as a member of the Judiciary Committee until 2007. He has served as a federal judicial clerk, an Assistant Attorney General for the Maryland Department of the Environment, and Research Director for the 1994 re-election campaign of Senator Paul Sarbanes.  He graduated from Colgate University and Harvard Law School.

The event will be hosted and moderated by Drew Clark, Chairman and Founder, BroadbandBreakfast.com, a news and events company building a community around broadband stimulus, the national broadband plan, and intellectual property.  Drew Clark has a long-standing reputation for fairness and depth in his reporting. He worked for the National Journal Group for eight years, ran the telecommunications and media ownership project of the Center for Public Integrity, and was Assistant Director of the Information Economy Project at George Mason University. He has written widely on the politics of telecom, media and technology for a variety of publications, including the Washington Post, GigaOm, Slate, and Ars Technica. Drew launched BroadbandCensus.com in January 2008 as a means of providing objective information about broadband speeds, prices, availability, reliability and competition.


The Intellectual Property Breakfast Club is a "widely attended event" under House of Representatives Rule 25, clause 5(a)(4)(A).
